TIMARU. January 2.
At tho Gladstone election to-day, John Studholme and D. R. Buckingham were nominated. The poll takes place on the Bth inst. The cricket match between Timaru and Carisbrook (Dnnedin) was won by the former, by three runs. The Caledonian sports to-day were a great success, over 5000 people being on the grounds The cropa in the district will be far below the season, owing to drought. Mr Wakefield, M.H.R., addresses his constituents at Temuka on Saturday. On Saturday last sparks from a railway engine set fire to several private premises in Timaru, and burnt a valuable property. An inquest is to be held regarding the origin of the fire on Friday, and legal proceedings will probably be taken. L3OOO worth of damage has been done by this cause lately.
