DUNEDIN. January 1.

On New Year's Eve the larrikins pelted the police with stones, and behaved in a very rowdy manner. Several were arrested. A window in one of the Princes street shops was broken by them. The annual sports held at the Caledonian Society's Grounds to-day under the auspices of that society were witnessed by about 7000 people. The weather was somewhat unpropitious. The principal events resulted as follows : Throwing the 161b Hammer— W. Matheson and W. O™, L 3; Webster, L 2 ; Claxton, LI Running High Leap — W. Henderson, L 3 ; Oampball, L 2; Moriarty, LI. Handicap Walking Match, distance, three miles — Claxton, L8 ; Brookes, L 4; Sims, L 2. The Caledonian Handicap Running Match will be completed to-morrow. The crops in the Mataura district have improved greatly during the last fortnight, showers being more frequent. The prospects of a good harvest are considerably better, aud it is fully anticipited that many of the yields will be equal to, if not larger, than those of previous years.
