OBITUARY

MR. WILLIAM MARSH It is with deep regret that we report the death of Mr. William Marsh of Kaitaia, at the age of 58. He died suddenly at his home on Friday evening. His birthplace was Leeston, near Christchurch. Mr. Marsh came north when still young to join Station VLA. ! Radio Awanui, on Wireless Road, then the North Island radio link with Pacific shipping, operated by the P. and T. Department. About 1913, he was the P. and T. staff radio operator. In 1915 he went overseas with the radio troop of New Zealand Engineers. After war service in Mesopotamia he went into France and saw the end of the campaign against Germany before serving in the Army of Occupation. In 1919 he returned to New Zealand as a sergeant, to resume his ; duties at station VLA. He later married Miss Clare, Winifred Matthews, elder daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. F. H. S. Matthews, Kaitaia. In 1926 he was transferred to Wellington as a radio inspector, returning to Kaitaia in 1937 as postmaster. In 1940 he held the same post in Dargaville, retiring at the end of 1944 when he returned to make his home in Kaitaia. He is survived by a wife, three daughters (Mrs. E. D. Kay, Kaitaia; Miss Pat Marsh, Kaitaia; and Miss Doris Marsh, Auckland) and one son, Mr. R. W. (Dick) Marsh of Auckland. Last year Air. Marsh was elected to the first Kaitaia Borough Council, and was appointed the first deputyMayor. His major activities included chairmanship on the R.S.A. Welfare Committee, an Executive meriiber of the R.S.A., member of the Masonic fraternity and a keen member of the Kaitaia Bowling Club Executive. MR. HARRY JAMES WHITE The death occurred in the Kaitaia Hospital on Saturday last of Harry James White at the age of 68. Born in Christchurch, Mr. White came north on account of health reasons, almost 30 years ago. He took up farming at Rangiputa where he was deeply respected by his many friends. Of a quiet and retiring nature, Mr. White had been in hospital for several weeks. He was a bachelor but he is survived by nine brothers and sisters. The funeral took place at St. Saviour’s Church, Kaitaia, yesterday, pall bearers being all R.S.A. men.
