SOCIAL GATHERING About 40 members of the Kaitaia Community Arts Club met last evening in the Parish Hall. During a short meeting at the start of the evening Mr. A. G. Wilson presided. The minutes of the first general meeting of the Club were read by the Secretary, Mrs. G. Simmonds, while the aims and objects of the Service were outlined to all present by Mrs. Simmonds. After a lengthy discussion on the various artists offering their services for the coming year, it was decided to arrange visits from Lili Kraus in March, from Helen Hopkins (formerly Helen Gray) violinist, her husband, Mr. G. Hopkins, clarionetist, and Rosalind Caradus, vocalist, in April,* and from a drama company in May. Endeavours will also be made to have two daytime exhibitions of art sometime during those three months. Members quite understood Lili Kraus’ inability to fulfil her engagement in Kaitaia when it was realised that she had presented a large benefit concert in Auckland. A delicious supper was then served by the lady members, after which Mr. H. Timbers presented a varied programme of recordings. Explanations were given by Mr. Timbers as to why he had chosen a particular record while he also pointed out other items of interest. The tone of these records was greatly enhanced by the used of an electric amplifier lent by Mr. E. C. Combs. During the evening Miss Marion Morison danced two ballet items to the piano accompaniment of Mrs. E. Clark. It was very gratifying to see so many of the younger members of the Service present and taking such an interest in the type of programme to be presented in the future.
