MANGONUI NEWS

VISIT OF HIGH COMMISSIONER TO MANGONUI Mangonui was honoured by a visit from Mr. A. R. Cutler, V.C., High Commissioner for Australia, and Mrs. Cutler, while en route to Kaitaia via Kaeo. There was a large gathering in the hall on Tuesday afternoon, Mr. A. W. Thomas presiding. The schoolchildren were paraded by Mr. Hall, the headmaster, and before entering the hall the High Commissioner addressed them, concluding his talk by making a bargain with them, that, if they studied Australia, he would ask

the headmaster to grant them a half holiday on the morrow. In his address which owing to the time limit had to be brief, the visitor stressed the need of the closest cooperation between the two Dominions as they were the only two Brit-ish-settled lands 'n the great Pacific. Their ideals were alike and they were bound together by political, economic and racial ties, and were an integral part of the great British Empire. In war they had co-operated, and now the peace period still needed such co-opevation to continue. Mr. Thomas called on Mr. R‘> T. Wrathall to reply on behalf of the old Mangonui residents, Mr. J. Kennedy on behalf of the Maori people and Mr. Fisher on behalf of the Oruru settlers. Miss Judith Harris presented Mrs. Cutler with a flower spray. Afternoon tea was provided by the Mangonui ladies, during which the visitors made the acquaintance of all the residents. Stating that the impromptu function was a sample of the hospitality they were receiving all over Northland, the visitors left for Kaitaia, after the singing of the good old tune, “For They are Jolly Good Fellows,” and the playing of the National Anthem by Miss Grace Marchant. Personal Mr. J. Cadigan of Coopers Beach has disposed of his property to Major Judson, V.C., who intends to take up his residence there in the near future. Mr. Cadigan left for Auckland on Monday last and it is his intention to proceed to the West Indies where he formerly resided. Mr. B. V. Rope was in Mangonui for a flying visit during the week.
