Death of Mr. Thomas Baker

It was with deep regret that a large circle of friends read of the death of Mr. Thomas William Baker of Pukepoto road, Kaitaia, which occurred at the Kawakawa Hospital on Tuesday morning August 17. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place at the Rawene cemetery, the service being conducted by the Rev. H. J. Steele. The late Mr. Baker was born in England 73 years ago, coming to New Zealand when 14 years of age. His first employment was with Mr. Morrison, nurseryman, of Warkworth, and taking a great interest in plants and plant culture, he became very proficient in his occupation. About 52 years ago he took up land in the Hokianga district, farming a property and establishing a nursery at Oue. About 18 years ago he secured a section on the Pukepoto road, Kaitaia, and devoted his whole attention to the nursery business. He was often called upon to act as judge in the fruit, flower and garden produce sections of district shows, and was ever ready to give advice to amateurs in regard to their garden problems. A few months since his health started to fail and five weeks ago he entered the Kawakawa Hospital. Mr. Baker married Miss King of Oue, and is survived by his wife and eight children —five sons, Arthur (Hamilton), Frederick (Waipapakauri), Kenneth (Oue), Horace (Kaikohe) and Jack (in the armed forces); and three daughters, . Mrs. O’Donell (Auckland), Mrs. Goodhue (Hikurangi), and Dorothy (Auckland).
