Young- People’s Movement in Kaitaia

About 50 residents of the district were present at a meeting in the Parish Hall which was convened by Mr. W. B. Beard on Wednesday, August 18, for the purpose of forming a club for the benefit of the young people of the community. Mr. Beard having explained the object of the meeting, the following resolution was unanimously carried: ' “That this meeting of citizens of j Kaitaia town and district, having carefully considered the alarming social and moral drift prevailing today, is convinced that it is imperative in the interests of our younger people that we establish in Kaitaia a young people’s organisation ,and to provide for their entertainment and leisure in a wholesome atmosphere. Further, we believe that such an organisation can only be maintained effectively by : (1) —Adopting an uncompromising attitude against alchoholic liquors beingin any way associated with its functions and organisations; and (2) That it should have a background of allegiance to good citizenship and undenominational Christian principles. We therefore resolve that a committee be formed immediately to explore ways and means to this end.” The following committee, consiting of seven young and seven older people was then elected: Mesdames J. B. Reynolds and J. Brent, Misses M. Reid, N. White and J. Morpeth, Rev. A. F. Collard-Scruby, Messrs. W. B. Beard, C. B. Michie„A. W. Bird, R. McKenzie, B. Mclntosh, L. Turner, R. Perry and L. Beard. Mr. L. G. Thompson was elected secretary and treasurer.
