88th BIRTHDAY OF MRS. CHAS. HARRIS
A number of friends gathered at the home of Mrs. Chas. Harris, Snr., last Wednesday night to celebrate the occasion of her 88th birthday. Among her guests Mrs. Harris had with her all her children—Mesdames Lincoln and Woods of Auckland and Messrs. C. W. and T. S. Harris of Mangonui. A very jolly little evening was spent, the younger ones providing music to entertain. A very dainty supper was served and a beautiful birthday cake made by Mrs. Harris’ daughter, Mrs. Woods,
was then cut by the guest of the evening. All rose and drank the health of Mrs. Harris, wishing her “All the best.” “For she’s a jolly good fellow” was sung, concluding a very pleasant little party.
WELCOME HOME DANCF
A very well-attended welcome home dance was held in McKay’s Hall, Mangonui, last Thursday night in honour of Lieut. Beasley and Sgts. Mahon and Blucher, and all other lads on furlough from the Middle East. Music was supplied by Mrs. Simelhay assisted by Mr. Sorenson, and extras from Misses Wrathall and Marchant and a visitor. Mr. G. Berghan made a very efficient M.C. After a delicious supper had been handed round, Mr. V. Noble Beasley, on behalf of all present, extended a ver yhearty welcome to our lads. “For they are jolly good fellows” then followed, with three of the heartiest of cheers. Sgt. Mahon very suitably replied on behalf of the boys in a very touching speech. Dancing continued until early hours when all were certain it had been one of the most pleasant of evenings—renewing acquaintances with the lads from overseas.
