DEATH OF MR. J. HOWS

It is with regret that we record the passing of Mr. J. T. A. Hows, an old identity of Whangaroa. The death occurred at the week-end at Waitapu, Whangaroa. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. R. Jamieson at Waitangi (Whangaroa) on Sunday morning. The graveyard is the oldest in this district, and many of Whangaroa’s earliest settlers are buried there. Mr. Hows was born at Boston, Lincolnshire, 94 years ago. From his birthplace he went to Jersey and was educated at the Jersey college. While a young man he left for New Zealand, where he arrived in 1860, during the Maori wars, in Taranaki. His friend and fellow-passenger, one Dr. Hope, was killed almost immediately. Mr. Hows later came to Whangaroa on a visit to Mr. Whitelaw, and finally settled there with his wife, a daughter of the late Mr. James Shepherd who was for some time connected with the Samuel Marsden Anglican Mission, Bay of Islands. Mrs. Hows predeceased her husband several years ago, and there are four surviving sons : Robert and Ivan (Whangaroa), George (Tako) and Frederick (Kaikohe).
