Lamb-Eating Pigs

A good deal is heard at different times about the losses caused among young lambs by wild pigs and an episode that was witnessed recently within a few miles of Blenheim would make it obvious that the position has not been exaggerated. Quite close to the main road \yas a cow with a calf a few days old and an onlooker from the road noticed a boar chasing it. The call’s mother, attracted by the noise, rushed up and charged the boar, driving it off into some fern. As soon as the cow left the calf the boar renewed the chase, onlj to be again driven off. This was repealed several times, until the spectator went on his way, wondering whether the calf would be foolish enough to get out of its mother’s care. The pig was not a large one, but it could readily be understood that a ewe would have little chance of de _ tending its lamb as successfully as the cow did its calf.
