The Stagnant Gum Trade.
The gum trade in the Kaikohe district is still nearly as stagnant as ditchwater. The low price of gum offers little inducement to the natives to go out digging, but probably the hard times will press so heavily soon that even at the low prices being offered, gum will be sought to provide necessities. Most of the fields are practically deserted, though a few diggers are operating on the Omapere field.
