ORCHESTRAL CONCERT.

The Kaitaia Orchestral Society gave its fourth subscription concert (the last of the first season), in the Northland Hall on Friday 4th inst. Although the weather and roads for some weeks previous had been anything but good, thus preventing at rehearsals of more than half the personal of the Orchestra, the Conductor Mr W.R.Langley and the instrumentalists are once again to be congratulated on their performance and for their efforts to introduce a better class of music into the district. A careful reading was given Chopins “Nocturne,” the solo flantist Mr Walter Jones delighting all with the beautiful tone he produced on his instrument. InKussner’s "Evening Hour” and Handel’s celebrated Largo, careful study was manifest, while Greig’s “ Anitra’s Dance,’’ from the PeerGynt Siute.althoughacceptable, might have had a more careful reading on the part of some of the players. The pieces in lighter vein by the Orchestra proved most enjoyable, especially the (ast two marches " Gardes du Corps’’and “Old Faithful.” The Conductor introduced a London innovation—that of having the National Anthem printed at the head of programme, and inviting the audience to sing all three Verses to the accompaniment of the Orchestra. The vocal side of the programme at this concert was perhaps the best that has yet been before the Kaitaia public, and it would have been difficult in all probability to find a better in Auckland. Of the numbers of Miss Valentine and Mr Hunter, whose splendid singing at former orchestral concerts is so well known, no comment is necessary. The singing of Miss Woolhouse, Mr Jones, and Mr Hart must have come as a surprise to many, and we have no hesitation in saying that they would be a distirict acquisition to any concert party

gracing the stage of a city theatre. Mr Langley contributed “Elegie” a work of his own as a pianoforte solo. The accompaniments to the songs of Miss Valentine and Mr Hunter were played by Mr Anderson, to Mr Hart by Miss Woolhouse and to Mr Jones and Miss Woolhouse by Mr Langley. The Orchestra was led by Mr T. H. Walker, Mr R. E. Anderson was pianist, and Mr W.R.Langley conducted in his usual style, alwavs having his forces under control. The piano for the accompaniments was kindly lent by Mr Treacher.
