KAEO.

(From our own Correspondent.) Some time ago I reported a County Council election, when I stated that one of the successful candidates was called “ Father ”of the Council. I do not wish to contradict this statement ; what I want to tell you about ii “ Fsther’s ” ingenious and original ides, which takes the form of a subscription list, the proceeds to be used for widening a portion of the road near Kaeo, surely the sole work of the Council. Our advice to “ Father ”is to drop this business and pay more attention to Council matters, leaving these meddling matters to tbs " Old woman " with a reputation in that line of business; failing that, to resign and run a show of his own. It would be very awkward for “ Father ” if anyone met with an accident on the job ; besides someone in authority might s»y something unpleasant. If this advice is not taken, why not call tenders »nd give all hands a chance ? The subscription list would get more support.

Another little matter that deserves soma consideration is the Mangonui Sports. I noticed a report, and also an advertisement in connection with th»t ferce. Of course lam not going to say that any of the officers were in any way connected with the booth, but the winnings of that department would bs considerable even if the stakes in the events were too small to publish. But I must congratulate the club (?) on two events at least. The first w»s a cycle race, with 5* entrance fees tacked on, and, alter riding two miles to win, the handsome sum of 15s was handed over to the winner who rode 50 miles on the day of the sports merely to assist the club, to say nothing of his expenses and entrance fees to a race which ha did not win. The second was a man winnings mile race and being awarded 15s for his trouble, after entering to make the race up and keep the ball rolling. Does the club expect any assistance from ourside talent in future, alter such an unsportsmanlike running of affairs ? These men, placing these performances before the handicappsrs of a decent club, will have to pay the penalty ! How can clean sport and not “schlinten ” be expected with such miserable management as this ?

Our local weather prophet tells us that the 11 blowhard ” or "cyclone" that has been so much in evidence for the past few months, will shortly leave us in peace—we are fortunate it is not pieces. lam sure that quite a number of folk almost lost their sight, through their eyes nearly bulging out with wonder.
