FAIRBURN.

(From our own Correspondent.) The intake of milk at the Creamery is now decreasing fast. The heavy rain now falling should freshen up the pastures and check the decrease; at least we all hope so. I understand that Mr. G. Wilkinson is to have the support of the temperance party at the forthcoming licensing poll. He will also be supported by the moderate party. It is pleasing to note that a better class of man is comiug forward for these elections. Late as the season now is bush felling is still in progress in the Fairbum backblock area. Mr. W. Hagger’s steam traction engine is now at work on his first contract. When the engine first started the settlers were greatly alarmed for the road and a hasty petition was written and forwarded to the County Chairman, who, with his usual courtesy, immediately came up to Fairbum, accompanied by Councillor R. T. Wrathall. The Chairman expressed the opinion that although the surface was cut up in places and the waggon tyres were rather narrow for the load (about three yards) the road would not suffer permanently and that the interests of the settlers had been safeguarded by the bond held by the Council against damage by the contractor. I desire to say, right here, that both Mr. Hagger and his driver have been most careful and helpful to those driving and riding on the road, and the action taken by the settlers was in no way antagonistic to them personally but was prompted solely by solicitnde for the of metalled road which has been so hard to obtain and is so important to local industry. Another large section in the Outakai Block has changed hands. Messrs. T. E. and W. Coulter are the purchasers. Mr. G. L. Stanton’s road contract is not proceeding very rapidly. And Winter will be here soon. It has been stated that County contractors are not subject to the heavy traffic by-laws. If not, why not ? Fairbum, 28th January', 1909.
