Awanui Mullet.

Considerable correspondence has recently passed between Mr. Vernon Reed, M.P., and the Minister of Marine regarding the close season for mullet in the Rangtaunu Bay and northwards. As a result of persistence by our Member Mr, Reed received the following wire which shows that mullet fishing may now be carried on in the waters mentioned : “Vernon Reed, Esq., M.P., Kavvakawa. “ I have much pleasure in informing you that the request made by you re opening the mullet season has been given effect to, as the latest reports which came to hand since your communication seemed to point to the fact that the fish were fairly plentiful this year. I trust the people for whom you made representation iu this matter will appreciate your action. The limits in which they may take fhh hare been duly Gazetted. J. A. Millar, Minister of Marine,” With reference to the above Mr. H. G. Hunt, the Officer in charge of Customs, Mangonui, received the following wire on Wednesday last: —» “Close season for mullet abolished between Cape Karaka and South Head, Whangaruru Harbour. Now lawful take mullet between Cape Maria and Whangaruru Harbour. Please make this known. “H. Stephenson, Inspector of Fisheries, Russell.”
