RIFLE PRIZE SHOOTING.

By the account of the firing for the General Government prizes which appears below, and from the fact that at Wakefield a soore of 26 had been made with eleven shots by Mr, Samuel Hoult, when darkness compelled him to postpone the completion of his 15 rounds to another day, it will be seen that the Volunteers of this province have greatly improved since last year. The shooting on the part of the Nelson City Company, which had been postponed in consequence of wet weather, took place at the Company's practice ground, on Tuesday last, when a score of 30 points, the highest yet obtained in Nelson, was irtade by Mr. West, who certainly fired with great steadiness, making two bulls-eyes at the 300 yards range. One thing which we mentioned as having occurred at the preceding rifle match, and which we had hoped to have seen prevented, was, that bystanders interfered too much with the marksmen, more especially when firing at the 400 yards range. Another circumstance which we hope requires but notice to secure the prevention of its recurrence was, that, subsequently to the match, several persons, and among them those who were not Volunteers, fired for sweepstakes, and, while doing so, others were firing across the paddock in another direction. This may be perfectly harmless amusement, but, should an accident occur, we think that those who have command would not be held blameless for not having exercised their authority in prohibiting shooting by any but Volunteers, and that, at least, in the direction of the target. •"* Waimea South. — April 5.
