AMATEUR TRANSMITTERS

RELICENSING OF STATIONS (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) Wellington, Nov. 30. An announcement that the restrictions imposed on amateur radio transmitting activities at the outbreak of war have been reviewed was made today by the Acting-Postmaster-General (Mr Jones) . “Most of the frequencies allotted to amateurs were used by the Armed Services in and beyond New Zealand during the war,” stated the Minister. “In fact many of them are still in use and some time must necessarily elapse before they can all be cleared for amateur use. Moreover, international agreement will have to be reached in respect of future frequency requirements for military and commercial radio services before the complete amateur allocations can be finally determined.” The Minister added that a careful survey of frequency requirements in the New Zealand area had been made by the authorities concerned and it was found that certain frequencies could now be cleared for amateur use. He was anxious to afford amateurs the opportunity of again pursuing their hobby and to that end it was proposed to license their stations for operation on the following frequencies for New Zealand contacts only from 7.30 p.m. on the Bth December, 1945: In the 80-metre band 3.50 Q kc/s to 3,960 kc/s. In the 5-metre band 58,500 kc/s to 60,000 kc/s. “It must be clearly understood,” added the Minister, “that no attempt is to be made by amateurs to work stations outside New Zealand until they are authorised in that behalf. Such action would, of course, result in the immediate cancellation of the offender’s license.” The Minister concluded by saying that the restoration of certain other frequencies for amateur use and the right to communicate with amateur stations outside New Zealand would be considered as soon as the international position was clarified, and that amateurs who wished to license their stations for restricted communication should enquire at the post office for the requisite form which when completed should be handed in, together with the license fee of 30s.
