EXPLOSION ON DESTROYER
SIX NAVAL RATINGS INJURED Sydney, Nov. 29. Six Royal Navy ratings were injured. one critically, when a torpedo exploded in its tube on the after deck of H.M.S. Kempenfelt in Sydney harbour this evening. H.M.S. Kempenfelt, a destroyer flotilla leader, arrived in Australian waters early this year. She was tied up alongside the depot ship H.M.S. Tyne at anchor in the stream when the explosion occurred. Flames shot up 70 feet from the destroyer with the blast of the torpedo but the ship's crew swiftly extinguished the fire that broke out near the engine room. Two other British destroyers the Whirlwind and Wager were also alongside the depot ship Tyne. An official inquiry will be held into the cau*e of the explosion.
The force .of the explosion rocked waterside homes. The Kempenfelt’s superstructure was severely damaged and the Tyne slightly damaged.
