DIRECTORS WORK PRAISED
DEFENCE WORKS IN DOMINION Wellington, This Day. The Government’s acceptance of the resignation of Mr R. H. Nimmo from the honorary position of the Director of Defence Works Camps, Wellington, to take effect or. 30th November, was announced yesterday by Mr Semple, M.nister of Works. In expressing the Government’s appreciation for the valuable work carried out by Mr Nimmo over a period of two and a-half years, the Minister said that the satisfactory working of the camps was in itself a tribute to Mr Nimmo’s enthusiasm and ability at a time when many difficulties had to be overcome to secure the maximum possible application of manpower to the defence construction prjgramme. Mr Semple said that though the camps had been reduced in number since the defence construction programme was completed, the remaining ones, in view of the local shortage of boarding facilities, had continued to serve a useful purpose for accommodating several hundreds oi workmen employed on State housing construction, other industries. In view of this the Government had decided to continue the operation of one camp in Wellington city and one in the Hutt Valley, meanwhile, and as the necessity for a stpaiate organisation had ceased, these two camps would in future be under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department.
