The Telegraph Engineer wrote stating that the request for a public telephone call box in Motucka street could not be agreed to. Mr C. S. Spear drew attention to the condition of the footpath in Nile street east. It was referred to the City Engineer for attention. Messrs G. P. Russell and Sons Ltd. requested certain street improvements in Harley street north. It was decided to reply stating that the council would put the road in order when it was required. The Automobile Association (Nelson) drew attention to the bad state of the roads at the cemetery. It was decided to reply stating that it was intended to give attention to the roads at a later date. In connection with the Nelson Tobacco Company’s request for the future use of additional land on the reclamation area adjoining the present factory the council decided to reply that it regretted it could not let the company have any additional land. Mr H. G. Kingsland offered to raise, free of charge, sufficient pinus insigjnis trees to plant areas of the council’s waterworks reserves. The offer was accepted with thanks, the areas to be planted being referred to the Reserves Committee for consideration. The Waimea County Council reported on the action it was taking to reopen the proposal to provide better access to the Maitai Valley. A number of favourable replies were received from local bodies in respect of a proposal to hold a public meeting to hear a lecture by a representative of the One Hundred Thousand Petition on the subject of inter-est-free money. It was decided to advise the organisation that a meeting would be arranged. TEMPORARY HUTMENTS The Nelson Returned Services’ Association wrote supporting the council’s representations to the Housing Department for the erection of temporary hutments on land purchased for State houses, and stressed the fact that the need still existed for some relief to the present housing shortage. The Director of Housing advised that the Department had no authority to erect temporary hutments, as was suggested recently by the council. The Mayot suggested that there was no reason why the department could not get the necessary authority to erect hutments, in accordance with a request by the council which had offered to install the usual city services to the properties. He was disappointed with the present rate at which new State houses were being erected in Nelson. Councillor Rout suggested that the council might erect temporary houses on the State sections and collect the rent until permanent houses were erected.

The matter was referred to the Housing Committee for a repeat.
