REPORTS

CONSIDERATION BY COMMITTEE Reports by the City Engineer on street improvements, sewer improvements, and facilities at the abattoir, including the provision of two houses for employees were referred to the Finance Committee for consideration. The Reserves Committee reported that a deputation was received from the Nelson Council of Sport, consisting of the following: Mr M. MacLeod (secretary). Miss A. Compton, Messrs F. E. Boulton, L. W. Field, J. H. Hurrell, F. Lock, W. J. Terrill, J. W. Russell and K McKenzie.

The following submissions were made by the deputation: As to gymnasium—The present gymnasium at the YM.C.A. is already fully taxed and further accommodation is urgently required, the opinion being expressed that probably three gymnasiums will be required in Nelson within the next few years. Two buildings are likely to become available at the Nelson Aerodrome but there appeared to be some doubt as to whether these buildings were suitable and whether they could be economically dismantled and re-erected. The suggested sites were either the northern end of Trafalgar Park or on the vacant land on the northern side of Trafalgar street bridge. The City Engineer, in company with Messrs Lock and Field has been asked to inspect these buildings and to report on their suitability or otherwise. As to extension of playing areas' The deputation submitted that very few additional areas of land were available for recreational purposes and made the following recommendations: (a) That- considerable portions of future reclamations should be set aside for recreational purposes; (b) that the small section on the south side of Trafalgar Park be purchased and incorporated in the Park; (c) that the Council of Sport will support any action taken by the council with regard to the Community Centre proposals for the Government Buildings grounds. The committee also reported and recommend as follows;

As to the letter from the Churchwarden, Parish of Christ Church, suggesting that some alteration be made as to the path leading to the Cathedral on the eastern side of Church Hill.—That path be made at present but that the present path be put in order and that, when circumstances permit, another light be erected.

As to the trees on the Haven road reserve at the foot of Russell street. —That no action be taken with regard to the suggested removel of the remaining pine trees.

The report also referred to the proposed grandstand at Trafalgar Park. The City Engineer reported that one building at the aerodrome might be suitable for a gymnasium. The council rose at 11.30 p.m.
