NO TRAMS OR BUSES

ONE DAY STRIKE IN WELLINGTON 800 EMPLOYEES CEASE WORK Wellington, This Day. No City Corporation trams or buses were running in Wellington to-day. About 800 members of the Wellington Tramway Employees’ Union ceased work late last night in terms of the union’s decision to declare a 24-hour strike In protest against the withdrawal of the warloading bonus payment. Thousands of people dependent on the corporation services had to find alternative means of transport to get them to and from work. Normal running will be resumed to-morrow morning. The trams and corporation buses completed their normal schedules last night. The strike officially began when night shift workers—cleaners, maintenance men and others—who are due to begin work at 11 p.m. did not put in an appearance at the tramsheds and bus garages last night. No negotiations took place yesterday betvven the parties to the dispute, the Wellington City Council and the union. The men's demand for satisfaction of their claim for reinstatement of the bonus was not met by the council by noon yesterday—the time set by the tramwaymen at a general meeting on Sunday—and the decision to strike today was carried out.
