REPORTED BATTLE WITH JAPANESE Chungking, August $9. A Communist communique claimed that Communists entered Shumchun, 30 miles north of Hong Kong, and at present are engaged in a battle with Japanese and puppet troops. Fighting is also occurring near Nanking and Shantung Peninsula. MORE FRIENDLY ATTITUDE Coinciding with General Mao Tzetung’s arrival the Communist “New China Daily News” began referring to “President Chiang Kai-shek” instead of the “Fascist Reactionary Dictator.”
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
A Domei News Agency broadcast said the Japanese in Yokosuka are remaining indoors and traffic is prohibited as a precaution against danger when the Allies begin the occupation on August 30. A Paris message says General Lecerc, who will represent France at the signing of the Japanese surrender, is en route to Tokio. He recently was appointed assistant to Admiral Dargenlieu, French High Commissioner in Indo-China.
