NO REDUCTION IN TAXES

POSITION IN AUSTRALIA (Rec. 12.50 p.m.) Canberra, This Day. The slight fall in Australia's war expenditure gave no ground for expecting reduced taxes, said the Prime Minister. Mr Curtin. He also rejected a suggestion that it was desirable now to stimulate production of civilian commodities. Mr Curtin w r as commenting on a statement by a former member of the Federal Parliaent, Mr E. S. Spooner, who advocated a substantial reduction in taxation and also stated that excessive taxation rates and profit limitation were important factors in the black market. Mr Curtin replied that any severe control of operations of certain traders contributed to black marketing. Such traders were determined to dodge their obligations under any circumstances. Mr Curtin added that the gap in the Budget was still very great. Any reduction in taxation would merely increase the proportion of the cost of the war to be met from borrowing.
