URGE NOTES RETURNED
COMMONWEALTH BANK Sydney, Mar. 26. Hoarders and others have returned thousands of notes of large denominations to the Commonwealth Bank in the last week, and the note issue has been reduced by £2,000,000. This is the result of the recent suggestion that such notes might be withdrawn from circulation as a check to black marketing, gambling _ and other undesirable transactions.
The note issue now stands at £192,000,000, compared with the peak figure of £203,000,000 at the beginning of January. During February, the public showed a preference for smaller notes; the number of £SO notes fell from 89,190 to 86,953; £lO notes from 4,224.604 to 4,089,976. The number of £1 and 10s notes increased.
