OVER-CAUTION MAY BE FATAL
JAPANESE FLEET IN HIDING VIEWS OF COLONEL KNOX Washington, Jan. 9. Warning that it was foolish to assume that the Japanese Fleet was afraid to fight was given by the States Navy Secretary, Colonel Knox, at a Press conference. “It probably remains in hiding because the time does not suit its purpose, and it is waiting till the odds are in its favour, but while it remains cooped up our numbers in ships, men and planes are growing. “When the Japanese come out there can be only one ultimate result,” Colonel Knox asserted. “Admiral Halsey is too conservative in estimating the ratio of casualties at 10 Japanese to one American. The enemy losses in the Cape Gloucester area are almost 20 to one.”
