SOUTHBOUND ENEMY SHIPPING

BEAUFIGHTERS CAUSE DAMAGE (Rec. 1.10 p.m.) # Rugby, June 27. Beaufighters, escorted by Spitfires, to-day attacked south-bound enemy shipping off the Dutch coast. Three escort vessels were probably damaged and one supply ship possibly damaged. A Beaufighter observer said there was heavy flak and accurate observation was difficult, but dense smoke was seen pouring from two armed escorts. A Beaufighter pilot who reported that he hit the superstructure of an escort vessel said large chunks of wreckage flew up. Another pilot stated that he raked two merchantmen with cannonfire, then attacked again with guns from 100 feet. Spitfires reported that they hit every enemy fighter seen near the convoy. It is officially stated that our fighters destroyed two and severely damaged others. Another enemy plane was destroyed off the south-east coast of England in the moining. One of our planes is missing.—B.O.W. • ' *
