RETAIL MEAT PRICES
PROSPECT OF AN INCREASE Christchurch, June 27. Increased retail prices for meat are likely to be introduced soon, according to Christchurch master butchers. The Price Tribunal has asked butchers to attend a conference in Wellington to discuss the grading of all meat and a new price order. Something would have to be done to adjust prices, said one leading butcher. Livestock was costing him up to £SO a week more than he could sell it for at the retail prices fixed by the Price Tribunal. Retail prices of beef, he said, were fixed on a wholesale price of 36s per 1001 b., compared with 45s paid in recent weeks, and to-day there was a strong tendency for prices to harden. Actually, he said, the price for beef | had seldom been as low as 365.
