“OUR PERIL”

(To the Editor) Sir,—While there is comparative calm in the current world war there has been a recrudescence of new socia| order propaganda. "Freedom,” “Justice, universally desired, are the focal points of the opinions expressed. I am positively alarmed by the entire lack of a ration*! understanding revealed by our sectional public leaders concerning the bedrock aspects of the peril which now confronts the British and American units of mankind. Probabiy not 5 per

cent, of New Zealanders are conscious of the fact that too many centuries of freedom, and the creation of now covet ed wealth to enjoy that freedom, have dangerously “softened” all citizens of the wealthy democracies. While we were horrified at the non-senlimental spirit of Nazism, Hitler observed that: “Britain will lose her Empire because she is afraid to give orders.” In “Mein Kampf” he has recorded his first contact with social democracy and concluded thus: “During those days of mental anguish and deep meditation I saw before my mind the ever-increas-ing and menacing army of people who could no longer be reckoned asbelonging to their own nation.” Huier began this war because he was convinced that democracy only required a resolute push to send it crashing oblivion. Certainly the European secj tions of democracy now fully realise that Germanic nationalistic and totali* tarian warfare, biologically foUlqurfetC carries with it an awful power. * J It is about time we, still enjoying Garden of Eden conditions m our in« sular New Zealand began to take *£ commonsense view of our actual tion. We observe the war through e£* feet not cause. Hitler arid Tojo are to* day effects, not the fundamental cause* of this revolutionary upheaval. Tw| thousand million human beings with £ current normal increase of approxi* mately 15.000,000 per year: it is the urge to exist individually behind thi£ entire mass of mankind that has pro* duced Nature’s, not Hitler’s, spring-clean war, in which, as ever, th* fittest human stock shall again b* paramount. It is now obvious we scarcely conscious of imminent peril. A£ yet we know nothing of the stingin* spiritual and material effects of defeat with its corollary of revolution, in£ flation. starvation or despotic <no£ Pacifist) control of our destiny. On ihZ home front we challenge totalitarian absorption of abandoned democratic riches and wealth with kindergarten sectional propaganda about “No su*

perior people,” “Social justice.” Thafr is why “general apathy” is so potAilaC as we drift towards Utopia; as wC dream that New Zealand’s destiny is t* lead mankind to universal brotherhnocC Presumably this leadership by any chance, imply that the “no su« perior people” idea will allow Germans, Laplanders and Hindus tc share our leisurely work and it* ethically enervating reward as a prac£ tical demonstration of the new Chrisg tianised secular order. Our latest strike indicates how al£ democratic leadership, through the ballot box, is entirely at the mercy ofc irresponsible disloyalty, during a roajo£ war, to race and nation. Concerning such a fundamental issue as our destiny being one of self-determination or Slav* ery, Party Government, especially tfthei£ it is a Government blindly elected ore the threshold of world war to implc* ment feather-bed ideology, mak£s o£ effective unity a transparent venee* of party. I venture to predict that if the Bnf.i--.lp and American white stock is to be ptedominant in post-war leadership, it will be compelled to abandon leadership, born of party appeal to fifths; ignorance of reality. If the Amecf Powers really mean business aboU£ winning this war and ensuring wvrst peace, exceptionally strong leadership must be found. To survive the cdtfsS quences of this war, in the worcHP_p£ Hitler, we must become “hard as the primeval rock.” The children noNAT’itf our schools, colleges and churches, who? are learning to forget the world-old spiritual dynamic such words as Race, Empire, Nation and Patriotism impJy.T should be taught thoroughly, as in Germany, and at once, that to avoid slavery and the horrors of abortive revolution, they must receive thorough training t° defend home pnd national frontiers. There is not a second lose. Germany and Japan, exploijiftg day and night the unprecedented doned wealth of lethargic democracy, have world supremacy in sight. EOr us to keep on harping that the meek and thriftless shall inherit the earth, is now pointing directly, via ballot boxes and campaigns for Christian Order, to Pacifist racial extinction.—l am, etc. 5 ----«- ARTHUR HUNTER: Richmond, 22nd October.
