BIG JOB IN BRITAIN | APPEAL BY LABOUR MINISTER Rugby, Aug. 8. j The immediate necessity 'or the construction of aerodromes, port facilities and camps for United Slates land and lair forces in Britain is announced by | the Minister of Labour, Mr Bovin, in a I message to employers and workers of | ihe building and civil engineering industries. J Describing this as Britain’s greatest jjob, Mr Bevin summoned all concerned ; to accomplish one of the biggest undertakings of the war. The object of the scheme is to convert Britain into a base from which the American land and air forces will operate. The work is ajready well under way, but to ensure its rapid accomplishment 28.000 building workers who were due to be called up for ; the forces are to be left in their jobs at least till October. Mr Bevin declared: “Not a minute must be wasted. Craftsmen must be prepared to abandon the tools of their craft and use the labourer’s pick and shovel. The task is vitally urgent to i enable us to mount an early offensive.’’
