NEW WINGS—AND UNIFORMS
The decade from 1903-13 saw the building extended by the addition of a new east wing, with a new laundry, science room, four new classrooms and 18 new bedrooms. A proper gymnasium was also built early in this period. In 1904 the Free Place regulations came into force. Now. for the first time a uniform dress was made compulsory and all the frills and flounces, unsuitable silks and brightly coloured ribbons which formerly adorned schoolgirls’, gave way to neat workmanlike uniforms of blue print blouses and skirts. Peter Pan collars, wide belts and broad-brimmed sailor hats It is amusing nowadays to read of the “No Corset” league inaugurated in the College by the gymnasium instructor. Miss Greenwood, and of the little lectures delivered to the girls on the evils of wasp waists and tight belts. Games and sport were beginning to take an increasing part in the school
