THE NINETIES
The next decade saw many changes and developments and a new generation of College girls passed beneath the gum tree's spreading branches—the little one* with their clean white starched pinafores and the older girls in their lur-trimmed or braided jackets and small-waisted frocks with long skirts and leg-o’-mutton sleeves. About this time the prefect system was introduced and two years later, in 1897. cookery classw weie included in the school curriculum. It is recorded that some qualms on the part of the early Governors at the innovation were completely set at rest when they were entertained at a dinner cooked by the newly-formed cookery classes. In 1900 the College published its first magazine and in the same year the Old Girls' Association was formed This association two years later founded the Old Girls’ Association scholarship. Games and recreation clubs were started among the girls about this time, and one of the most popular sports was swimming in the deep pool of the Maitai which had just been set aside for the women and girls of Nelson.
