AXIS IN MOROCCO
STEADY PENETRATION CASABLANCA AS FUEL BASE London, May 8. Details of Axis activities in French Morocco given to the Lisbon correspondent of the “News-Chronicle” by an independent witness indicate that German penetration is proceeding steadily, especially in naval and other strategic centres. Th§ witness believes that Casablanca is regularly used as a refuelling, and refitting base by Axis submarines, and thinks that there are two or three cruisers there. He saw the 35.000-ton French battleship Jean Bart at Casablanca. She was fully manned, but was without guns. Guns may be shipped from France. Casablanca has all the necessary mounting equipment. “My informant counted 11 destroyers and six submarines,” says the correspondent. “The latter appeared to be laid up without crews. It was impossible to see whether they were French, German or Italian.”
