RICHMOND

BOROUGH AFFAIRS FORTNIGHTLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The fortnightly meeting of the Rich- j mond Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr A. R .Tuffnell), Crs McGlashen, Lukey. Poole, Norris and Stratford. Cr Palmer was excused from attendance. The meeting opened with prayer. Before commencing the business the Mayor referred to the loss sustained not only by Motueka but by the whole district in the death of the Mayor of Motueka, Mr R. J. L. York. Mr York had been Mayor of Motueka for nine years and chairman of the Waimea Power Board at the time of his death. A motion of sympathy with the family was carried in the usual manner. The Mayor also conveyed to Mr Rogers the council’s sympathy in his recent bereavement. Accounts totalling £l5O 7s were passed for payment. FOREMAN’S REPORT The foreman’s report was read and adopted as follows: Lower Queen street. McShane’s road and Wensley road have been graded since my last report. A railing has been erected on the eastern side of McShane’s road culvert and given one coat of white paint; a second coat will be put on at the first opportunity. The j following footpaths have been weeded j and cleaned up: Oxford street, Wensley j road, Dorset street. Upper Queen street, George street and portion of William 1 street. The lawns, hedges and frontages at the cemetery and at the Town Hall have been trimmed and other cleaning up is in progress. The grass strips on the roadsides have been cut but the cleaning up of the grass has not yet ben completed. From time to time on the very hot days the State highways have been blinded with fine chips; as this supply is now almost exhausted more chips should be obtained immediately. The following gravel has been carted from the river: Oxford street, 12 yards (a total of 33 yards); Headingly Lane, 30 yards: and 9 yards of gravel and 12 yards of clay have been dumped in the borough yard. The reservoir, yesterday, was 18 inches below the spillway. Arising from the report it was resolved that the necessary chips for blinding the main highway be procured. It was resolved that the rubbish be collected on Wednesday the 18th inst. An inspection is to be made of the water-fittings throughout the borough. The matter of water restrictions was left in the hands of the water works committee with power to act. CORRESPONDENCE I A letter from the Institute of Town I Clerks regarding the Town Clerks’ Conference had been held over from last meeting and it was now resolved that no further action be taken. Mr H. Stratford wrote thanking the council on behalf of the family of the late Mr Jas. Hunt for the council’s expression of sympathy and floral tribute in their recent bereavement. The Electrical Engineer, P.W.D. Nelson, asked the council to approve of a proposed site for a public works camp in connection with the erection of the transmission line from Stoke to the Cobb. The Mayor explained that the department was prepared to co-operate with the council with regard to water and J sanitation. On the Mayor’s motion it was resolved that permission be granted provided that suitable sanitary arrangements are carried out. Water is to be supplied at the rate of one shilling per thousand gallons. The District Representative, Main Highways Board advised that the council’s representations with regard to the Murchison-Maruia via Shenandoah Main Highway, have been forwarded to the Main Highways Board. Wellington. The Registrar of Social Security, Nelson, advised that the council’s application for an extension of the present scheme 13 authority to cover improvements to the water scheme had been referred to the Controller of Employment, Wellington. The secretary “Navy Queen” Committee asked permission to hold a sacred concert in the Town Hall. Richmond, on the evening of Christmas Day, proceeds to be devoted to the Queen Carnival Funds. It was finally resolved on the motion of Cr McGlashen. seconded by Cr Stratford, that an experimental shaft be sunk above the reservoir stream, provided the Social Security Department agrees to the use of scheme 13 ment to assist with the work.
