A GERMAN FREIGHTER CAPTURED SCUTTLING ATTEMPT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL VESSEL WHICH LEFT TAMPICO [U.P.A.-By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) WASHINGTON, 9th Dec. The Navy reported that the British cruiser Diomede took possession of the Idarwald after the crew had attempted to scuttle her. An earlier message from Havana stated that the Cuban Navy reported that it heard the German freighter Idarwald (5033 tons), which left Tampico (Mexico) 10 days ago, sending out an SOS to-day indicating that she had been torpedoed by a British cruiser. The Idarwald at 2.30 p.m. radioed that she had been attacked by the cruiser off the south coast of Cuba at 2.40 p.m.; she radioed that her crew was taking to the lifeboats. / The Cuban coast freighter Mambi later advised that she was proceeding in the direction of the Idarwald. ATTACKS BY ENEMY NEW YORK, Bth December. According to the Mackay radio, the Norwegian steamer Hidlefjord (7639 tons) reported that a mysterious ship was firing on it sdeg 20 min north, 12deg 33min west at 7.10 p.m. The steamer Empire Jaguar (not listed at Lloyd’s, but believed to be a vessel recently acquired by Britain from the United States) was torpedoed at 15deg 34min north, 17deg 35min west at 6.40 p.m.
