PLOT AGAINST HITLER

DISCOVERY BY THE GESTAPO NAZI PARTY MEMBERS INVOLVED MANY ARRESTS MADE BROADCAST STORY FROM WARSAW LONDON, 27th August. The Exchange Agency’s Warsaw cot respondent says that Polish wireless stations to-night broadcast a story that the German Gestapo discovered a plot against Herr Hitler, in which military members of the Reichstag and some Nazi Party members were involved. It was stated that the proposed summoning of the Reichstag on the 26th August to hear Herr Hitler’s proposals to Britain were abandoned after discovery at the Kroll Opera House of complete preparations for an attempt on the life of Hitler. A strong military contingent was posted at the Opera Mouse and many arrests were made in Berlin and throughout the Reich. BELGIAN NEUTRALITY BRUSSELS, 27th August. The British Ambassador, Sir Robert Clive, informed King Leopold that Britain will in no circumstances violate Belgian neutrality and independence.

ACTIVE SESSION

FOREIGN EXCHANGE MARKET

GOLD MAKES NEW RECORD (Hririab Official Wireless) RUGBY, 26th August. The foreign exchange market experienced an active session for a Saturday, this being the second day of the withdrawal of “control.” In the absence of support from the exchange equalisation account there was further appreciation against sterling, London on New York closing at mean 4.40. A new record is made by gold at 1555, silver being 20 1-16, forward 19 7-Bd. In banking and financial circles the decision to suspend the operations of the exchange equalisation account in order to protect British gold reserves from the severe strain of the flight of foreign capital is still the subject of commendation. There is, however, a tendency to emphasise what is understood to be the official view of the financial measures taken in the last few days—that they are essentially temporary measures to deal with special and temporary condtiions.

NEW ZEALAND’S MUTTON SURPLUS

REPORTED TAKING OVER BY BRITAIN NO CONFIRMATION YET OBTAINED CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. It is reported that the British Government decided as, a defence precaution to take over the whole of New Zealand’s mutton surplus, amounting to about 1,000,000 carcases. No confirmation could be obtained from freezing -companies or the local representative of the Meat Producers’ Board, Mr H. D. Acland. The Board, he said, would meet ir, Wellington to-morrow, but he knew nothing of any decision to take over the surplus. This season, because of the restriction placed on New Zealand exports of mutton and lamb to Britain and heavy killings, the Dominion has a surplus of between 25,000 and 27,000 tons. It is assumed that if the report is correct that Britain would want New Zealand mutton for canning. In exploring possible uses for the Dominion’s surplus meat, the board had considered canning, but it was found that the army and navy preferred canned beef, and only 3000 out of every 7000 tins of canned meat sold in England were mutton.
