MINING TOWN ENGULFED
OVERHANGING CLIFF CRASHES MOST OF INHABITANTS AWAY ! U P A.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received 25th January, 12.40 p.m.) VANCOUVER, 24th January. A midnight dance in a nearby town attended by most of the 100 population of the mining town of Hedley in British Columbia, saved scores of lives when an overhanging cliff crashed a thousand feet engulfing nine houses. Trapped while asleep, Peter Strand and his housekeeper, Johanna Green, were killed.
Twenty others, including eleven children, were aroused by the roar and fled to safety in their night attire. The merrymakers, returning an hour afterwards, found their home interred.
