INFANTILE MORTALITY

NEW LOW RECORD IN BRITAIN I British Official Wirelenal RUGBY, 23rd January. Provisional estimates of the birth, death and infantile mortality rates for 1938 were announced in a speech at Norwich by Mr Walter Elliott, Minister of Health. He said the infantile mortality rate was down to 53 per 1000 live births, constituting a new low rate record. It was five below the rate for 1937 and four below the previous record low rate of 1935. The birth rate for 1938 is higher than in 1937, at 15.1 live births per 1000 of population. The death rate for 1938 was. with the exception of 1930. the lowest on record —11.6 per 1000.
