STRENGTH OF 70,000 IN SIGHT MEETING OF DEFENCE COUNCIL TO-DAY L I'A.— By Electric Telegraph—Copyrigbtl (Received 25th January, 11.5 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The Prime Minister, Mr J. A. Lyons, stated that the success of the drive to increase the militia strength to 70,000 and of the £63,000,000 defence programme generally was in sight. Mr Lyons, who will preside over a meeting of the Australian Defence Council to-day, added that Australians should know that the defence programme is being carried out with the greatest expedition and that when completed it would assure them of reasonable securitay against aggression.
