It is believed that threats against them have been made since Mr Dewey announced his determination to purge city politics of the influence of Tammany Hall, and to stop the activities of racketeering organisations. Police guarded the doors and elevators of Mr Dewey's office, and closely questioned all callers while Mr Dewey was confessing with members of the United States Attorney’s office. It was indicated after the conference that a Federal inquiry would be begun to-morrow into a charge that A. J. Marinclli. who resigned recently from the position of county clerk in New York, had harboured a fugitive con-
Mr Dewey filed charges last week in which he alleged that Marinclli had been associated politically with ■‘thieves., pick-pockets, dope pedlars, and big-shot racketeers."
