COMBINED SCHOOLS’ SPORTS

HARAKEKE MEETING __ i I ANNUAL GATHERING ON ARMISTICE DAY i TEAM SPIRIT FOSTERED Since If) If) the committees of the! Lower and Upper Moutcrc, Ncudorf, | Harakeke, Tasman, Mapua and Mahana | schools have combined to hold a sports j meeting to commemorate the signing of : the Peace Treaty at the close of the j Great War. Each commiltc in turn undertakes the management of the sports, and the event is now looked for- : ward to as a well-established fact, and j an annual meeting place for parents and friends. This year’s sports, for which the Mahana Committee undertook the management, took place at Harakcke on Armistice Day in a pad- j dock kindly lent by Mr It. Tcece, who has, from the commencement always shown a very keen interest in the gatherings. There was a line attendance of parents and children—upwards of 200 children taking part in the diilerent events. No cash prizes arc given, but some fine trophies in the shape of j shields and cups were keenly competed ; for. The fact that these go to the | school instead of to the individual J winner appears to be developing a good team spirit among the children. The Harakeke Tennis Club, with commendable enterprise, provided a soft drink and ice cream stall, and very kindly supplied each child with an ice j cream—a most popular item in the j day’s proceedings. Mr F. A. Carling, the ward member : on the Education Board, opened the j meeting, and in a very fine address j sought to impress on the children the : importance of the day—not only in j remembrance of those who had made j the great sacrifice in the War, but more j especially towards doing everything j possible in working towards the preser- j vation of peace in the future, and the j part the children listening to him might j play in helping to bring this about, j A programme of over 30 events was j gone through—arrangements working j very smoothly under the direction of i Mr Archibald, chairman of the Mahana j committee, and a willing band of work- j ers from the other committees. The j secretarial duties were efficiently carried out by Mr Walkey. Lower Moutcrc made a run-away victory in points, scoring no less than [)7i, the other schools being fairly consistent. At the close Mr Archibald addressed the children, complimenting the winners on their fine performances, and thanking all who had helped so willingly, after which Mrs Archibald presented the trophies. Cheers were given for Lower Moutcrc, and for Mr Tcece for the use of his paddock.
