ACCLIMATISATION
715,000 FRY LIBERATED COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MELTING At the monthly meeting of the Nelson Acclimatisation Society Council Mr C. R. Fell presided with a full attendance of councillors. The Curator reported that all the fry in the hatchery had now been liberated in the lakes, rivers and streams in the district. Owing to the failure of the water supply to the hatchery in consequence of the continued dry weather the liberation had to be hurried last week, which left some of the outer districts without supplies for this season. The total number of fish liberated was 715.000 A letter was received from the State Forest Service in reply to a request made by this Society that permission be granted In anglers to fish the Molueka river through the Golden Downs State Forest reserve. The letter pointed out that in common with the general policy adopted by the Department throughout the Dominion it was not possible to grant the request owing to the great risk of fire. Reports from anglers indicate that the rivers are carrying a nice lot of fish in good condition. A request was received from a landowner in the district that representation be made to the proper authorities to close certain areas of land for a number of years where opossums are less plentiful, so as to enable these animals to increase. While the Society is in sympathy with the request the Council felt that this matter needed very careful consideration and the question was deferred while further investigations are made. Accounts totalling £ll2 14s lid were passed for payment.
