JUVENILE CRIME
POSITION IN NELSON CONCERN EXPRESSED IN COURT CHIEF DETECTIVE REFERS TO NEGLECT OF PARENTS The large amount of juvenile crime in Nelson during the past year was mentioned by Detective J. McLeod, when ten boys were before the Children’s Court this morning. The charges included breaking and entering and theft, thefts from the scow Kohi, theft of rowlocks, receiving stolen goods, wilful damage to a whare and contents on the Boulder Bank. The boys were admonished and placed under the care of the Child Welfare Officer for varying periods.
THIRTY-FIVE BOYS BEFORE COURT SINCE JULY
The Detective, in answer to the Magistrate, Mr T. E. Maunsell, said that since July 35 boys had been before the Court for serious crimes, and during the year there had been over 90. He understood that this was a considerable increase over last year. Apparently there was a total disregard for property by the juveniles of this town. He considered it was due to the neglect of parents.
“PARENTS RUINING THE LIVES OF THEIR CHILDREN”
The Magistrate said it seemed that the only solution was to impress on neglectful parents how they were ruining the lives of their own children by not correcting them.
