The weekly wireless bulletin of the information section of the League of Nations at Geneva says that the second session of the mixed Committee on Nutrition, appointed by the League Council, adopted several recommendations supporting endeavours to secure for populations a suitable supply of , necessary foodstuffs, especially pro- ■ tective foodstuffs. The Committee j asks the Assembly to recommend gov- j ernments to encourage and support in every possible way the scientific study of nutrition problems, with a view to ascertaining the optimum nutrition in each country, giving due consideration to differences in national and economic structure, climate and sources of supply. It also gives full support to health organisations in enquiries into widespread malnutri- 1 tion existing in the tropics and cer- , tain Far Eastern countries. : i 1 THE SUPPRESSION OF ILLICIT ! DRUG TRAFFIC I A diplomatic conference for ex-! amining a draft convention on the' suppression of illicit traffic in drugs, opened on Bth June. The president, M. Limburg (Netherlands) states that the present conference proposed to conclude a convention co-ordinating on an international basis the efforts of individual countries to suppress the illicit traffic. The main features of the draft convention are as follows: Acceptance by governments of an international undertaking to provide severe penalties for serious offences in illicit traffic; the possibilities of extradition from one country to another of persons who committed serious drug offences; the creation in each country of a central office for the supervision of co-ordina-

tion measures taken for the suppression of illicit traffic; and provisions for close collaboration between the central offices in various countries. The draft convention is now being considered in detail. FRENCH GOVERNMENT’S REPORT ON SYRIA The Mandates Commission has finished consideration of a report by the French Government on Syria and Lebanon in the presence of accredited representatives of the Mandatory and the commission also studied the United Kingdom's annual report of 1935 on Palestine. The main subjects discussed were immigration, land tenure, education, autonomous administration. justice, public health, finance, statistics and social questions. The commission examined the 1935 annual report on South-West Africa, which mentions increased revenue, improved railway receipts, and growth of production.
