THE WIGHTMAN CUP
BRITAIN LEADS AMERICA SINGLES SUCCESSES (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, 12th June. Three of the seven matches in the contest for the Wightman Cup between women’s lawn tennis teams representing the United States and Britain were played at Wimbledon to-day. In the singles, Miss K. Stammers (Great Britain) beat Miss Helen Jacobs (U.S.A.), 12-10, 6-1; and Miss Dorothy Round (Great Britain) beat Mrs M. Fabyan 6-3, 6-4. In the doubles Miss C. Babcock and Mrs J. Van Ryn (U.S.A.) beat Misses E. M. Dearman and M. M. Lyle (Great Britain), 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. WIMBLEDON CHAPTPIONSHIPS RUGBY, Uth June. Play in the All-England lawn tennis championships will begin at Wimbledon on 22nd June. Entries for the men’s singles number 118 and for the women’s singles 86. AMERICA WINS ' BY FOUR MATCHES TO THREE (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 13th June. America retained the Wightman Cup, winning four matches to three. Final results were:—Miss Fabyan defeated Miss Stammers 6-3, 6-4; Miss Round defeated Miss Jacobs 6-3, 6-3; Miss Babcock defeated Miss Plardwick, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2; Miss Jacobs and Miss Fabyan defeated Miss Stammers and Miss James 1-6, 6-3, 7-5. KEENLY-CONTESTED SET LONDON, 12th June. Miss Stammers, fighting gallantly from 0-3, led 5-4 and 6-5 on service. Miss Jacobs, exploiting her fierce forehand powers, retrieved her position and went ahead, 9-8. Miss Stammers forced her way to 10-9 but Miss Jacobs volleying magnificently, saved the set points. She twice aced Miss Stammers, levelling the scores at 10-10. Miss Stammers was undaunted and volloyed and served her way to 11-10 when rain suspended play for half an hour. After that Miss Jacobs could not regain touch.
