NEW SCHOOL FOR RICHMOND

APPLICATION TO EDUCATION DEPARTMENT BOARD’S INTENTION TO INCLUDE MODERN FEATURES The Nelson Education Board to-day decided to make application for a new school for Richmond, the application to be held over pending an inspection by the secretary of the most modern schools in the Wellington and Canterbury districts. The Richmond Committee wrote pointing out that the present school was 57 years old and was of the type which made draughty conditions for the children. Application was made for a new school, and it was requested that it be treated as a matter of urgency. Mr E. J. Scantlebury pointed out that Richmond had been on the list for some time and had been in second place behind Reefton. Reefton now had its new building and Richmond should now be placed first on the list. He moved that application be made to the department for the new school. Several members pointed out that Richmond offered an ideal opportunity ( for erecting the most modern form of building and it was suggested that the secretary, while attending the Education Boards Conference, take the opportunity of inspecting the latest schools with a view to incorporating modern features in the proposed new building at Richmond. It was suggested that the rooms should be arranged to allow corridors between them and that the building have a verandah running along its front. • It was decided that the application be made, it to be deferred pending an inspection by the secretary of schools recently erected in Wellington and Christchurch.
