PRICE OF GOLD NEW HIGH RECORD (British Official Wireless) (Received 3rd September, 11.50 a.m.) RUGBY, Ist September. A further advance of sjd in the price of gold to a new high record of £7 Is 5d took place to-day. the increase oil yesterday’s price being based on supply and demand and including a premium of 2s 4d over the dollar at 4.99 7-8, and 7d over the franc at 74 23-32.
Sterling is slightly firmer on most of the principal centres to-day. The downward movement in the past few days caused no anxiety in city financial circles, where there is a confident belief that it is mainly due to “bear” sales, and that covering of such operations will shortly produce recovery hi tlie lates It is realised that no change has occurred in the economic situation of the country to warrant depreciation.
