THREAT TO HARM AND KIDNAP GRANDCHILDREN SECRET POLICE MAKE ARREST (United Press Association—By Electric Tel egraph—Copy right) (“Times” Copyright) (Received 31st August. 9.0 a.m.) NEW YORK 30tli August. A threat to harm President Roosevelt and kidnap three of his grandchildren was revealed to-dav with the arrest of Benjamin Varney, a former naval nviatiou mechanic, by Secret Service operatives, who declined to reveal details. From -ath :r sources it was learned that l!le threat was contained in a lot for addressed to Mrs Roosevelt at White House, and demanded a large sum of monev “Or else my gang will kidnap the two-month.’is-old baby of Elliott Roosevelt and th two children of Mrs Anna Dali.” Tli e letter did not reveal the nature of the harm to President Roosevelt.
