ZEEBRUGGE RAID RECALLED
GALLANT SEAMEN (By Telegraph—Special to “The Mail”) AUCKLAND, 20th February. Commander E. L. Berthon, D.S.C., R.N.. the new officer commanding the Naval Base in Auckland, accompanied by Mrs Berthon, arrived by. the Rangitata from London, and will succeed Commander Nelson Clover this month. At the lime of the Zeebrugge raid in April, 1918, Commander Berthon was a lieutenant oil 11.M.5. Vindictive when that ship ran alongside the mole in a. gallant attempt to block the harbour. Led by their officers, of whom Commander was one. the sailors and marines, in face of heavy fire, rushed ashore by means of specially prepared gangways. Commander Crichton, V.C., of H.M.S. Diomode, was also in that raid, and like Corn'i i and or Berthon, there won his most coveted decoration.
