HOARDINGS THAT OFFEND
COMMENT BY THE NELSON AUTOMOBILE; ASSOCIATION
The Nolson Automobile Association, ,in furtherance of its campaign against hoardings, has circularised members as follows.:-- : ’■ '“Misiting, motorists are charmed with the • vgrierf beauty of our country-side) but*,are inclined to criticise, the number of-hoarding,!., 'y ■,. / • JiThe) Committee of 1 the Association ap-preciate-the justice of this criticism, aiid. t’hink thg .time, .has come for. Jhe members to join in presenting a united front against this form of advertising. “A little while ago we had every roadside dotted with advertisement plates nailed to trees; and posts, but advertisers appear to have realised the futility of these, and this particular nuisance has been abated. The hoardings however remain, and have lately been increased in number.
“No exception can be taken to reason-' able adverising by, hoardings and posters in the business portions of "the town, but in the country it. is a different'matter. In Great Britain such, resentment was aroused amongst.motorists by the growing use of hoardings.in the country that mapy advertisers) notably the big benzine companies, found it advisable to yield to public, sentiment, and remove their hoardings. ;A ' ' ; “Now the cure for the hoarding, nuisance rests ' with • the motorists themselves, and the effectiveness of combined action has been; shown in Great Britain and also here in New 'Zealand.' ' “The Committee mpke a‘personal appeal to you, as .a merrtber of the Association, to make a preference in business dealings in favour of tjiose who are not advertising ; on country hoardings. - • “To take benzine- as .aU example, it is more than likelyAhat you have found that, among good grade spirits, one suits your car as well as another. If so, the benzine to be used is that of the company which does not offend you by hoarding advertisements in the country. “So. with".'other advertisers—you have
aNfhoice .garages .to store or repair ,•/ your car, arid, 6f dealers to sollc.you tyres, ,\ furniture, V. or •• clothing, but: >: the ones to support are • those who refyain from spoiling tho countryside with hoardings. ” ;j Nelson motorists; the evil is clear to all and the remedy is in the hands of each.” j •■''T.- ’
